Sheene and Kenny Roberts are two of motorcycling's all-time greats but who was the best of the best? They first raced against each other at Daytona in 1974 and over the next decade they met more than 100 times and on four continents. Although Roberts beat Sheene in most of those encounters Merv Wright, who managed the Suzuki race effort in America and Europe, reckons Sheene was often on inferior machinery.

A few weeks after his Daytona crash, Sheene bought himself this second-hand Rolls-Royce to cheer himself up. The famous personalised Barry Sheene racing plate followed. This picture was taken at the Match Races at Brands in April 1975. American rider Dave Aldana is the back seat passenger and the driver is Merv Wright, who moved from America to Britain to manage the Texaco Heron Team Suzuki squad the following year. If the picture had been taken a few minutes and few miles down the road it would have captured Aldana introducing the drivers of Kent to the American practice of mooning.

The flamboyant helmet design of Graziano Rossi, captured here at Spa Francorchamps in a rare shot aboard the Marlboro Yamaha in 1982, and equally distinctive riding style, have all the all the hallmarks of his son Valentino. Rossi senior only managed 23rd in the 500cc World Championship that season, but had been placed as high as fifth, in the 1980 title race. Better known as a 250 runner, Rossi should have won the 1979 250 title aboard the factory Morbidelli, but his campaign came apart mid-season.

Few great racers make great engineers. Sidecar driver Helmut Fath was most definitely the exception to the rule. Captured here deep in concentration as, along with long-time passenger Wolfgang Kalauch, he drifts the URS outfit, a machine built entirely with his own hands, into a fast Oulton Park sweeper during the 1968 International meeting. Working in a tiny workshop, German Fath managed to build a four-cylinder engine so powerful, and reliable, that it took him and Kalauch to that season’s World Championship, denying the previously dominant BMW crews victory.

Outspoken American Kenny Roberts arrived in Europe fearing no one and once on the track it was easy to see why. Captured here during the 1976 Anglo American Match Races, at Oulton Park, Roberts clearly isn’t bothered by an unruly 750 Yamaha and the close proximity of the railway sleepers that line the circuit. Having been brought up on the dirt track ovals in his native USA, neither an excess of power nor a slippery track fazed the tough Californian. Roberts went on to win the blue-ribbon 500 title three times, in 1978/79/80, for Yamaha and after moving on to team management witnessed his son Kenny Junior take the title in 2000 riding for the rival Suzuki team, a feat no other father and son have equalled.

WD127477@10 Salsbury model
For those who didn't guess it was a Salsbury Model 85 (standard model - the deluxe model having a faired in front end with a windscreen and a rear pillion seat). The Model 85 had a production run starting in 1946 and ending in 1949 after 700-1000 units were produced. The official public debut of the Model 85 was at a press conference in late 1946 on Fargo Street in Los Angeles (chosen as Fargo Street was the steepest road in Los Angeles, with a 32 degree slope). The idea was to display the Model 85's hill climbing ability - a task it apparently managed with ease.

Iconic Engine Norton 500T
Norton managed to create a legend by raiding the parts bins in the factory and adding an alloy barrel and head to their ES2 500cc engine to make the 500T. This superb line drawing is of the 1950 version.

The flamboyant helmet design of Graziano Rossi, captured here at Spa Francorchamps in a rare shot aboard the Marlboro Yamaha in 1982, and equally distinctive riding style, have all the all the hallmarks of his son Valentino. Better known as a 250 runner, Rossi should have won the 1979 250 title aboard the factory Morbidelli, but his campaign came apart mid-season.
